Blueberry compote is easy to make and tastes wonderful in cakes, desserts, or ice cream. You can use fresh or frozen berries, and it doesn’t take many minutes to make.
Homemade compote for cakes or desserts
Blueberry is a flavor most of us like. Therefore, it is also popular to use in layer cakes, desserts, or just as a topping on other desserts like mousses, panna cotta, or ice cream.
A jar of blueberry compote is nice to have in the fridge. Besides using it in cakes and sweet treats, it’s also great on your skyr or yogurt in the morning.
Just try it… And it’s really easy to make at the same time. You can use fresh or frozen blueberries, so there’s no excuse not to.
Ingredient notes
Blueberries – I have used frozen blueberries here, but if you have fresh ones in abundance, they can also be used. However, I love eating the fresh ones, so I often use frozen ones for compote, jam, etc.
Sugar – Regular white sugar. You can also replace it with cane sugar if you want. It gives a slightly deeper flavor and tastes fantastic.
Lemon juice – Not much is needed, but it gives that tangy kick that such a compote needs.
How to make blueberry compote?
Compote is probably one of the easiest things you can make with blueberries. You simply put blueberries, sugar, and a little lemon juice in a pot and bring it all to a boil.
Now it just needs to boil for about 10 minutes without a lid, and then you can put the compote in jars and let it cool before eating or using it in cakes.

Tips and tricks for the recipe
-
Use wild blueberries with dark flesh
- There are several different types of blueberries, but the ones I like best are those that are blue all the way through, often referred to as wild blueberries. The other type of blueberry with lighter flesh can also be used, and the taste is still delicious but not quite as intense.
Serving suggestions
- Serve, for example, on overnight oats with skyr and chia, on oatmeal with banana, or on skyr in the morning.
- Use it in layer cakes or as a topping on desserts, for example, on mousse or on Panna Cotta.
